Social Capital

  • Social capital is defined as the resources that exist in the cooperative relationships in the social networks between employees and managers in a workplace. Social capital is thus an umbrella term that says something about how collaboration works across the workplace, and which develops in line with research in the field.
  • To be able to solve the common task, it is necessary that managers and employees can cooperate, and that cooperation is based on trust and fairness.

Why work with social capital?

Research shows that social capital has an impact on how employees thrive and perform in a workplace. Therefore, it is important to gather documented knowledge about the effect of the different forms of social capital on the various relationships in the company. Such knowledge can have an impact on the company's performance and the motivation, well being and health of the employee. It is also important to gain documented knowledge of the factors that influence social capital in workplaces and to find out how social capital can be maintained and improved in workplaces.

Have you looked at your IGLO?

IGLO is a principle that clarifies that it is a common task to create and maintain well-being in the workplace.

  • According to the Working Environment Act, it is the manager's responsibility to take care of the psychological work environment, but the principle behind IGLO is that successful changes in the psychological work environment are best achieved if the efforts are supported at all 4 levels.

IGLO stands for Individual, Group, Management and Organization.

  • An individual’s behavior and well-being are influenced by colleagues and the workplace culture. Conversely, the individual also influences their colleagues — for example, by initiating group activities or contributing to shaping the workplace culture.
  • A group is formed when several individuals work together. The group’s norms, dynamics, and culture influence each person’s behavior and well-being — and vice versa. A group with a strong sense of unity often enhances the well-being of its individual members.
  • Leadership connects workplace teams with the wider organization. Leaders motivate people, coordinate tasks, and plan strategically to meet goals. Good leadership strengthens collaboration, well-being, and performance — while employee well-being also affects leadership.
  • The organization is the overall structure and culture that includes individuals, teams, and management. Its rules, goals, and values influence how people work together — while the organization itself is also shaped by society.
