The Occupational Health and Safety Organization (AMO)

The Occupational Health and Safety Organization (AMO) is essential for maintaining a safe and healthy workplace. In Denmark, companies with 10 or more employees are required to establish a working environment group consisting of elected health and safety representatives (AMR) and appointed supervisors.

Companies with 1–9 employees

In smaller companies, there is no formal requirement to establish a working environment organization. Here, it is the employer's responsibility to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for the employees.

Companies with 10–34 employees

Must establish a working environment group, which consists of

  • a supervisor appointed by the employer and
  • a working environment representative / Health and Safety representative (AMR) elected by employees.

Both must complete relevant training, including the mandatory Occupational Health and Satefy (OHS) Course.

Companies with more than 35 employees

Must establish a full working environment organization (AMO) including multiple supervisors and health and safety representatives (AMRs).

All appointed supervisor and elected representatives must complete relevant training, including the mandatory Occupational Health and Satefy (OHS) Course.

Frequently Asked Questions about OHS Training and AMO in Denmark

We have gathered important knowledge about occupational health and safety work. Click on the sections below and learn more about the topic.

Why should I take the occupational health and safety training?

If you’ve been newly elected as a health and safety representative (AMR) or appointed as a supervisor, you are required by the Danish Working Environment Authority to complete a mandatory OHS training course.

This OHS course gives you:

  • The necessary skills to fulfil your role in the Occupational Health and Safety Organization (AMO)
  • A solid understanding of your legal responsibilities
  • Tools to identify and prevent workplace risks, injuries, and stress-related issues
What is the difference between the mandatory and supplementary OHS course?

The mandatory occupational health and safety training is a mandatory education for occupational health representatives and supervisors who are members of the Working Environment Organization.

The supplementary occupational health and safety training is for those of you who are already members of the Danish Occupational Health and Safety Organization (AMO) and has undergone the mandatory OHS course.

As a member of your company's occupational health and safety organization, you are entitled to two days of supplementary occupational health and safety training in the first year, and 1.5 days in the second year. There should therefore be a focus on strengthening the occupational health and safety organization's competencies so that both the supervisor and the representative can carry out their tasks and duties in occupational health and safety work and be updated on the regulations. Information and registration for the supplementary occupational health and safety training here.

What is the difference between a working environment group and a working environment committee?

In companies with 35 or more employees, the OHS structure consists of two levels:

  1. Health and Safety Committee (AMU) – Strategic oversight

  2. Health and Safety Groups – Daily, practical tasks

Health and Safety Committee:

  • Consists of supervisors and AMRs

  • Handles broader health and safety decisions

  • Ensures coordination across departments

Health and Safety Group:

  • Typically consists of 1 AMR and 1 supervisor

  • Handles day-to-day OHS tasks such as APV, risk assessments, and internal safety communication

Companies with 10–34 employees are only required to have a health and safety group.

What are my responsibilities as an Occupational Health and Safety Representative?

As an Occupational Health and Satefy representative (AMR), your job is to represent your colleagues in health and safety matters and ensure their concerns are heard by management.

Key responsibilities of an AMR include:

  • Providing guidance on safety procedures

  • Identifying workplace risks and report them

  • Participating in OHS meetings and workplace assessments (APV)

  • Supporting a safe and healthy working environment

Your role depends on your company’s industry, size, and risk profile. For futher guidance visit the Danish Working Environment Authority's website
